Grab Handle Guides

Summary

  • Car grab handles are usually installed on each side of your vehicle’s roof interior, just right above or on the side of your head. Although this may vary depending on your vehicle’s year, make, and model.  Some vehicles do not have a grab handle installed on the driver’s side.
  • Grab handles were originally installed in vehicles to help you get in and out of your vehicle. When shopping for grab handles, you must consider the quality of the materials used as well as the handles’ aesthetic appearance and of course, value for money.
  • A usual grab handle replacement costs around $50 to $250.  To ensure that you are getting the right fit, enter your vehicle’s correct details into our search engine.

You do not need to be a car enthusiast or a driver to know about grab handles. Almost every vehicle type is equipped with these handles and you surely experienced holding on to one during a bumpy ride.

In this article, you will learn more about grab handles, its function, and why it was originally installed in vehicles. You will also learn the factors you should consider when shopping for one, as well as the importance of replacing a damaged one.

What is a grab handle?

Generally, a grab handle is installed on any side of an object, meant to aid your balance or help you get in and out of a place. It may also be referred to as a safety device that is meant to increase accessibility and mobility for people with disabilities.

A car grab handle also works similarly. These are the handles you see on each side of your vehicle’s roof interior, just right above or on the side of your head. The position of grab handles may vary depending on your vehicle’s specific make and model.

But even if car grab handles are often called “Oh Jesus” handles, did you know that this is not what they were originally for? Grab handles are installed in vehicles to help you get in and out of your vehicle. This is especially true for people with disabilities or hip problems. For people without disabilities, this may just serve as additional support, but for people with mobility problems, grab handles are necessary. High-riding vehicles such as full-size pickup trucks may make going in and out difficult without any support.

Are there types of grab handles?

Car grab handles or grab bars are pretty straightforward car parts so there is not much when it comes to its types. Generally, the design of your grab handles will depend on the type of vehicle you own. For example, truck grab handles may look different than handles found in sedans, hatchbacks, and luxury vehicles.

The most common types of grab handles are made of plastic, stainless steel, and nylon. Some are made with a combination of these materials such as steel and rubber or fabric and plastic.

When shopping for car grab handles, it is also important to take into consideration how it fits with the rest of your vehicle’s interior. Usually, it is advisable to buy grab handles that will not disrupt your interior’s look and feel. You do not need to worry as there are many grab handle variants for you to choose from.

OEM vs OE Grab Handles

You might also encounter the term OEM and OE replacements when shopping for grab handles. What is the difference between these two options?

Original Equipment Manufacturer or OEM car parts refer to car parts that are made by the vehicle’s authorized manufacturers. If you’re planning to buy OEM grab handles, it will most likely be the same as the grab handle you currently have installed in your vehicle. One advantage of buying OEM car parts is the assurance of quality coming from the brand. However, OEM grab handles are usually priced higher than their OEM or aftermarket counterparts.

OE car parts and accessories are priced lower than OEM. Usually, these are the ones you see in almost all shops selling car parts and accessories. Although they are usually priced lower than OEM, it does not mean that they rate less in terms of quality. Most OE grab handles have the same quality as OEM. They are available in many variants and designs, so if you’re aiming for a different look and feel of your interior, this may be the best option for you.

What to look for in a car grab handle

Shopping for grab handles may be overwhelming because of the number of options available for you to choose from. To help you decide on which car grab handles to buy, here are three major things you should consider:

Durability

Since the main purpose of a grab handle is to serve as support when going in and out of your vehicle, it has to be made of quality parts. A car grab handle should be made of durable and high-quality materials to ensure that it will not just break off anytime.

Aesthetics

Aside from durability, you also have to take into consideration that car grab handles are part of your vehicle’s interior. This makes aesthetics one of the factors you should consider when choosing one for your vehicle.

Value for Money

Investing in good and high-quality grab handles are important. However, investing a large chunk of your budget for grab handles is unnecessary. There are many high-quality and durable grab handles that are sold at a reasonable price, just like the ones that can be found at CarParts.com.

Why is it important to replace a broken grab handle?

Your car’s grab handle usually has a part made of hollow or plastic components. Grab handles may snap off at one point in your vehicle’s life, especially when it is frequently exposed to stress.

It is important to replace a broken or damaged grab handle because sharp broken edges may cause minor injury to you and your passengers. Aside from that, a broken grab handle would damage the look and feel of your vehicle’s interior.

How much does a grab handle replacement cost?

A usual grab handle replacement costs around $50 to $250. It may be sold individually or in sets of two or four. There are grab handles available for the front, rear, and passenger side of the vehicle. Make sure to check the product specifications before buying one for your vehicle.

A Beginner’s Guide to Fixing a Broken Car Grab Handle

The grab handles found in your car interior is actually hollow and made of several plastic parts, so don't be surprised if it snaps off into several pieces with enough force. And aside from being unsightly, a broken grab handle can pose a hazard due to its sharp edges as well as deny you something to hold on to while on the road.

In this guide, we'll share with you the steps to fixing a cracked or broken grab handle.

Difficulty level: Easy

What you'll need:

  • Flat screwdriver
  • Epoxy or polyurethane-based glues
  • Sandpaper
  • Knife or a small saw (optional)

Step 1: Pry off the cover of broken grab handle from the trim using the flathead screwdriver. Slide the tip of the screwdriver into the gap in between the two panels of the cover and work around the edges until the clips that hold the panels in place come free. Do not hurry this process, as too much force may cause one of the clips in the handle to snap.

Step 2: If the handle is screwed onto the trim, loosen the screws with the screwdriver. Make sure to

Step 3: Inspect the extent of the damage. The glue needs to have a smooth even surface, so sand off any jagged edges or irregularities. You can also choose to cut out the interior supports of the handle if the crack covers a sizable portion of the handle. However, if the crack covers more than half of the entire handle it may no longer be structurally sound enough to support any degree of weight against it. In such cases, it is better to discard the handle and buy a replacement.

Step 4: Prepare the epoxy mix and spread it on the damaged area of the handle. Use the applicator provided with the epoxy or a clean popsicle stick to apply the glue evenly over the broken area. Then overlay the handle over its mounting point on the trim to allow the epoxy to cover more areas. Wipe off any excess glue as soon as possible.

Step 5: Allow the glue to set on the handle bar for at least an hour or so. Depending on where the crack is located, you will need to use a C-clamp, a vise grip, or a heavy object to press on the handle while the glue sets.

Step 6: Screw the handle back onto the mounting. Make sure not to over-tighten the screws as excess pressure from the screws may cause the handle to snap off again. If the handle does not have screws, skip this step.

Step 7: Reattach the cover of the grab handle. Align the clips properly and press until you hear an audible click.

Step 8: Test if the glue has adhered properly. Slightly tug the handle back and forth. The handle should remain firm and stationary, but if it still breaks off disassemble the handle and try again.

Note: Even if repaired successfully, the handle may no longer be as strong as before and cannot support your entire body weight.
