Head Gasket Set Guides

Head Gasket Set Buyer's Guide

Summary

  • A head gasket set is comprised of components that sits between the cylinder head and the engine block inside an internal combustion engine. Its main function is to create a seal between two mating surfaces such as the top and bottom half of the engine.
  • The head gasket creates a seal between the engine block and cylinder head, preventing both oil and coolant from leaking into the engine cylinders. It also makes sure that these two fluids circulate freely within the engine without cross-contaminating each other.
  • The tight seal that a head gasket creates is necessary to achieve and maintain the right engine compression inside the combustion chamber to maximize efficiency. The head gasket also directs harmful gases from the engine towards the exhaust system to be processed.
  • A head gasket set may include different types of engine gaskets including an intake gasket, fuel pump block-off gasket, valve cover grommets, fuel line copper washers, thermostat seal, O-rings, and more. They may also come together with a cylinder head bolt set.
  • The materials used for a head gasket heavily influence their ability to maintain a proper seal despite high combustion pressure and extreme temperatures inside the engine.
  • Driving a vehicle with a blown head gasket can result in costly and irreparable damage to your engine. It is advisable to immediately consult a licensed mechanic for head gasket repairs.
  • The cost of a head gasket set may vary depending on your vehicle’s specific year, make, and model. OE replacement head gasket sets may cost you anywhere in the range of $5 to $410.

What is a ‘head gasket set’?

A head gasket set is a set of components that sit between the cylinder head and the engine block inside an internal combustion engine. Its main function is to create a seal between two mating surfaces such as the top and bottom half of the engine.

Most of these gaskets have an embedded copper or steel wire ring reinforcement seal that is flattened to prevent dents and bending. They also fill the gaps securely between imperfect surfaces thanks to a coating of rubber, latex, elastomer, Kevlar, or fiber materials.

What is the function of a head gasket?

The head gasket creates a seal between the engine block and cylinder head, preventing both oil and coolant from leaking into the engine cylinders. It also makes sure that these two fluids circulate freely within the engine without cross-contaminating each other.

When the spark plug ignites the fuel vapors, a high amount of pressure is created inside the combustion chamber which produces energy that initiates and maintains the pistons’ up and down movement inside the cylinder that power the vehicle. The tight seal that a head gasket creates is necessary to achieve and maintain the right engine compression inside the combustion chamber to maximize efficiency. The head gasket also directs harmful gases from the engine towards the exhaust system to be processed.

What’s included in a head gasket set?

A head gasket set may include different types of engine gaskets including an intake gasket, fuel pump block-off gasket, valve cover grommets, fuel line copper washers, thermostat seal, O-rings, and more. They may also come together with a cylinder head bolt set.

The different types of head gaskets

The materials used for a head gasket heavily influence their ability to maintain a proper seal despite high combustion pressure and extreme temperatures inside the engine. Here are some of the materials commonly used for head gaskets:

Composite gaskets

Older vehicle models that were equipped with cast-iron engines typically had composite gaskets that were flat and compressible. They were usually made from graphite or asbestos. Composite gaskets are rarely used in modern head gasket sets , especially since asbestos is a proven health hazard.

Solid copper gaskets

Copper is a malleable metal that allows it to conform to surfaces that need to be sealed. Its elasticity also allows it to stretch without warping, especially in situations where a composite gasket would’ve already failed.

Multi-layer steel (MLS) gaskets

This type of head gasket is made up of three metal layers—a thicker center layer sandwiched between two thin outer layers of coated steel. Most modern vehicles have engines that use MLS head gaskets. They are typically coated with a high temperature and chemical-resistant coating that allows is to withstand exposure to extreme conditions.

Rubber gaskets

This type of head gasket is known for its flexibility and heat resistance. They are easy to install and provide a leak-proof seal, even for surfaces that have minor imperfections.

Carbon gaskets

Carbon is known for its ability to endure extended exposure to high temperatures while it provides superior sealing.

Cork gaskets

Thick cork valve cover gaskets provide a seal that effectively maintains compression levels without the need for tightening.

Aluminum gaskets

This material is ideal for sealing irregular or warped surfaces because of its pliability.

What are the signs your car needs head gasket repair?

There are several things that can cause a head gasket to fail. If you start noticing one or more of the following symptoms, you should immediately have your vehicle checked by a licensed mechanic.

Coolant leaking under the vehicle

Rust-colored liquid underneath the vehicle and similar stains in the engine bay is a common sign of a blown head gasket. High pressure, corrosion, or strong vibrations may loosen a worn gasket which can result in a coolant leak.

Overheating and white smoke out the exhaust

Low levels of engine coolant due to a blown gasket will likely result in an overheated engine. Without an effective seal, coolant can also be sucked into the exhaust system where it is burnt off, emitting white smoke from your tailpipe.

Bluish smoke emitted from the exhaust

A leak between a cylinder and an oil gallery can pressurize the oil system and compromise the lubrication of crankshaft bearings. Leaked engine oil sucked into the exhaust system will also result in a bluish smoke blown from your exhaust pipe.

Milky sludge

Cross-contamination of oil and coolant due to a blown gasket will result in a ‘milky’ fluid mixture that compromises the engine cooling system.

Engine misfire and loss of power

A gasket failure between cylinders will lead to compression loss that will cause the engine to misfire and lose power. You’ll also notice sputtering and reduced fuel efficiency.

Ticking noise at idle

An outside leak may not be common, but it could still happen. Pressure leaking from inside the engine will make ticking noises that may sound much like an exhaust leak.

Can you still drive a car with a blown head gasket?

Driving a vehicle with a blown head gasket can result in costly and irreparable damage to your engine. A blown gasket will not only reduce your engine power, but it can also cause coolant and oil to leak where they shouldn’t. Therefore, it is not advisable to continue driving your vehicle until it has been checked by a licensed mechanic.

How much does head gasket replacement cost?

The cost of a head gasket set may vary depending on your vehicle’s specific year, make, and model. OE replacement head gasket sets may cost you anywhere in the range of $5 to $410. Enlisting the help of a licensed mechanic to install this set is highly recommended to ensure proper fit and installation.
