In our search for high quality, yet practical headlamps, we came across Hella—a reputable brand of automotive lighting known for its sponsorship in racing and off-roading events. But a stable name is not enough to prove its product's performance. So to test whether or not they have what it takes to be crowned as one of the best in the industry, we've installed a DOT legal, halogen, H4 Hallo headlight on our '97 Miata.

PROS
- Being a drop-in replacement for our Miata's headlamp, the Hella headlight featured a good and snug fit on our vehicle.
- Installation was simple and straightforward. Our team only took half an hour, using only a Phillips screwdriver, to get the replacement done. We also appreciated how we didn't need to improve the vehicle's wiring just to connect the new headlight. The Hella headlight snapped right on our stock electrical connector with any problems.
- Once installed, we took the Miata for a drive to test the new Hella headlights. The day and night difference, as advertised by the brand, was really evident as we drove through city traffic. As compared to the dimmer stock headlamps, this replacement had a better light pattern that significantly improved the illumination in front of my car.
- We also liked the little "lip" found at the edge of each of the headlight’s pattern. It helped light up unlit roads. The high beam pattern also enabled us to see everything clearer and at a farther distance, making it ideal for nighttime driving. Even with lamps at stock wattage (60/55Xenon +50% H4 bulbs), it still provided our Miata with ample visibility for safer driving.
CONS
- Aesthetically speaking, the Hella headlight does not give the Miata much of an improvement. It's style was a bit low profile for the Miata.
- This part had a lower anticipated bulb life. It only lasted for a little near 400 hours before it burned out completely.
- As compared to the non-DOT headlamps from Hella, this particular replacement part's design is more prone to corrosion and misting. Unlike its non-DOT lights, these headlights are designed with drain holes, which is responsible for its exposure to water and dirt.
- Although the beam emitted by this part is ideal for both day and night driving, it can sometimes be too bright when not aimed correctly. Before adjusting the beams, we noticed heavy reflection from street signs and oncoming drivers flashing us for the blinding light from our Miata.
Our say
If you're looking for an inexpensive way to improve your vehicle's lighting, then replacing your stock with a Hella headlight is a very practical decision. Aside from its relatively cheaper price, this headlamp can significantly upgrade the lighting performance of your vehicle, making it ideal for both day and night driving. Although this part will do less to nothing when it comes to your car's exterior, it is a practical upgrade worth spending your time and money on.
