Nissan Altima Guides

With one look at the Nissan Altima, you will be easily convinced that it is a Japanese car. It has the sleek style and the elegant, curvy looks inherent to most Nissan cars. But a closer look at the car reveals a larger body-a size not commonly used by Japanese car manufacturers for their cars, which are mostly small and compact sedans. This makes the Nissan Altima different from the rest of the Japanese cars, and even different from the rest of the Nissan fleet. While the Nissan Altima has a Japanese root, and a natural Japanese look, it is specifically made for the North American car buyer.

The current version of the Nissan Altima is a mid-size car offered in only the four-door sedan body style. This is the same version of the Nissan Altima introduced in 2002, although there have been a lot of minor revisions made especially on style and some interior equipments. The car is currently offered in four trim levels: 2.5S, 3.5SE, 3.5SL, and SE-R; and is available with two engine options: a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 175 hp with 180 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.5-liter V6 engine rated at 260 hp with 251 lb-ft of torque. Three basic transmission options are available: a 5-speed manual transmission, a 6-speed manual transmission, and a 4-speed automatic transmission. Standard on some models is a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode.

But the Nissan Altima has not always been as big, and it has not always been in the form that we see it now today. When it debuted in 1993, the Altima was basically a rebadged version of the Nissan Bluebird, a car whose size comes in between the compact and mid-size category in the American car market. This model was sold through 1997, after which the Nissan Altima was given a redesign. In 1998, the Nissan Altima is still similar with the Japanese Bluebird, but some differences have been noted in the front and rear end designs. This generation of the Nissan Altima lasted until 2001, and in 2002, the current generation of the Nissan Altima was introduced.

If you have to replace some parts of your new Nissan Altima, the best place to look for these Nissan Altima parts is in your local Nissan Altima dealer. There are also various Nissan authorized auto parts shop that can provide you with the authentic Nissan Altima replacement and repair part you need. Since the parts that can be found on these Nissan authorized store are genuine and built by Nissan, you can be assured of their reliability, quality and performance. Furthermore, they are guaranteed to fit well on your Nissan Altima.

But if your Nissan Altima model falls under the two early generations of the car, you may find it hard to locate the exact Nissan Altima part you need from your local Nissan dealer. For such parts, you can consult various aftermarket and custom parts vendors and manufacturers who can surely provide you with the Nissan Altima part you need. You can also find these parts conveniently over the Internet.

FAQs—Nissan Altima

My Nissan Altima's temperature gauge seems to be broken. I noticed that when it's 40 degrees outside and I start to accelerate, the needle starts jumping erratically to the left. However, when I release the gas pedal, it goes back to normal. Do I have to replace the gauge or is there another component I need to look at first?

The temperature gauge works with the coolant temperature sensor, so it's better to troubleshoot that part first before you replace anything.

Your Nissan Altima's coolant temperature sensor should be found under the hood, at the back of the cylinder head in the coolant housing. First, check for reference voltage to the sensor, which you can do with a multimeter. If you are not getting a reading, check for any blown fuse and damaged wiring and replace them. If the wiring and fuses are good, then the computer is most likely faulty.

Once you're sure that the sensor is receiving power, it's time to test the component itself. If the sensor is working properly, clean it before you reinstall it. However, if it is not working as exactly specified in your car's repair manual, then you must replace it.

What are my Nissan Altima's factory brake pads made of? Should I buy pads made of the same material when I have to replace them or can I choose something else?

The Nissan Altima usually comes with Kevlar organic brake pads. However, this doesn't mean you have to replace them with the exact same pads. There are other types out on the market such as semi-metallic and ceramic, so you will have a lot of options.

The Kevlar organic pads are softer and make less noise, but they wear out faster and create more dust. Meanwhile, semi-metallic brake pads tend to be more durable and ensure great heat transfer, but they also wear down rotors faster and are noisier. Finally, the ceramic brake pads are cleaner and quieter, and have excellent braking characteristics without wearing down the rotors. Whatever you choose depends on your needs.

I have a Nissan Altima, and I keep hearing a whining noise whenever I drive it. One thing I noticed is that it only does that during the day. I live in the desert so it can get really hot out. Is this normal or should I consult a dealer about this?

If your Altima has CVT, then it's most likely a transmission issue. Whenever the transmission overheats, a designed failsafe occurs, which also causes your car to make a whining noise. You may be pouring too much transmission fluid or the coolant level is low, especially when the weather is hot, but don't ignore these during wintertime either as this can still occur. You don't want to be that guy who takes his car to a mechanic due to overheating on a snowy day. Make sure that both fluids are adequately filled to ensure a quiet, hassle-free drive. It is also recommended that you avoid aftermarket fluids, since they don't have the same quality as the original and may damage your transmission or cause it to overheat.

Nissan Altima Brings Solid Performance on the Road throughout the Decades

For more than two decades, the Nissan Altima has enjoyed the spotlight as one of the most favored mid-size sedans across the globe. As the go-to vehicle of families who want a comfortable ride, the Altima offers features that exceed those of other vehicles of the same class. Sporty yet stylish, this sedan packs more than just good looks. With its nimble handling and robust powertrain, the Nissan Altima is both safe and fun to drive.

1993 – 1997: First generation

The first-generation Nissan Altima was unveiled to the public on June 15, 1992. As a replacement of the Stanza, the first Altima sported features that were similar to that of the Nissan Bluebird trim. Standard features of this sedan include a 150 hp- KA24DE engine paired with either a four-speed or a five-speed automatic transmission, comfortable seats that could accommodate four adults easily, and taut suspension assembly. By 1997, the Altima 1997.5 models included a crash-protection feature for side-impacts.

1998 – 2001: Second generation

Released in 1998, the second-generation Altima was only available to the American market. While the sedan boasted of a more powerful engine (from 100 hp to 150 hp) and better suspensions, there were a few misgivings about its overall design. Despite the more spacious interior, many customers felt that it lacked the quality found in the previous generation.

2002 – 2006: Third generation

The third-generation Altima presented a radical change in the design of the vehicle. As the first mass-marketed Altima, this generation of the well-loved sedan has an expanded interior volume and was the first to be outfitted with a powerful 240-hp V6 engine with 249 pound-feet of torque. With more power under the hood and stylish interiors, the third-generation Altima was the most esteemed among all models including those from the previous generation. However, some consumers found that the elongated wheelbase made the steering circle too wide.

2007 – 2012: Fourth generation

Released in April 2006, the fourth-generation Nissan Altima sported many recent innovations in terms of vehicle design. Bluetooth connection, Smart Key access, and a parking camera were just some of the additions to this sedan. Moreover, the third-generation Altima was the first of its kind to use the front-wheel drive automobile or Nissan D platform. Despite the shorter wheelbase, the interiors of the new Altima remained mostly the same. However, its 270-hp V6 engine, anti-lock braking system, and continuously variable transmission (CVT) made a huge difference in terms of vehicle performance.

2013 Onwards: Fifth generation

Designed in 2012 as a 2013 model, the fifth-generation Altima continues to use a V6 engine, despite speculations that the Altima will drop the V6 in favor of a 4-cylinder engine. The new Altima has a refined CVT, which increases the fuel economy of the vehicle. The rest of the features found in the fourth-generation Altima are carried over to the fifth generation.
