Oil Filter Housing Gasket Guides

Trouble-Free Replacement Procedure for a Worn-Out Oil Filter Housing Gasket

An oil filter housing gasket may seem like a very simple component, but it actually plays the essential role of sealing the connection between the filter housing and its cap. Since this is usually made from rubber materials, it's only natural for it to wear out after some time. If you've been seeing spots of oil under your car or on top of the engine, then you should take a look at the oil filter housing gasket immediately. Fortunately, changing this simple component is an easy task that you can do on your own. Check out the following straightforward steps:

Difficulty level: Easy

Tools that you will need:

  • Wrench set
  • Drain pan
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Filter
  • Replacement oil filter housing gasket
  • Drain pan
  • Owner's manual

Step 1: Park your vehicle on a well-ventilated and well-lit area. You'll want to make yourself as comfortable as you can in order to finish this task faster. Good lighting can also help you see parts of your car without the need of a flashlight. You should also make sure that your car has cooled down before you start this procedure.

Step 2: Lift up the hood of your car and disconnect the negative battery cable for added safety.

Step 3: Locate the oil filter housing. Its location may be different for every vehicle, you should read your owner's manual for to get specific instructions. You may also need to drain the oil, so keep your drain pan within arm's reach.

Step 4: Once you've found the oil filter housing, remove its cap and drain all of its contents into the oil pan.

Step 5: Pull off the hoses that are attached to the housing. Remember to go about this step carefully to avoid damaging any component.

Step 6: Remove the connection between the housing and the sensor by simply releasing the spring of the electrical wiring and pulling them off.

Step 7: In order for you to take the oil filter housing out of the engine, you need to remove the fasteners that are holding it in place first. These fasteners may have varying sizes, so make sure you take note where each of them are installed to avoid problems when reinstalling them later.

Step 8: Pull the oil filter housing out of your car and place it over a clean area.

Step 9: Using a flathead screwdriver, remove the worn-out gasket from the housing.

Step 10: Put the replacement gasket on the oil filter housing.

Step 11: Reinstall the oil filter housing back onto your car's engine. Make sure that you attach the fasteners in their proper places.

Step 12: Reconnect the sensor and hoses to the oil filter housing.

Step 13: Put a fresh supply of oil into the engine and reattach the negative battery cable of your car to finish up this procedure. After a few minutes, check the engine surface to see if it's now free from oil leaks.

This easy replacement procedure may take around one hour to finish if all the steps are carried out properly.
