PCV Hose Guides

Buying the Right PCV Hose

The PCV hose or the positive crankcase ventilation hose basically functions as a bridge between the PCV valve and the crankcase as it connects the two components. The PCV valve is the one that’s responsible for reducing the emissions coming from the engine. It’s a small, spring loaded component that has a sliding pintle inside. This tiny pintle is actually the one that controls the airflow in order to regulate the volume of air that will pass through the valve—whether it is increased or decreased. As the valve opens and closes to release pressure from the crankcase, the hose above it directs vapor to the engine. A faulty hose can damage the valve and this can cause your engine to have an imbalanced air-fuel mixture. As you know, having the right air-fuel mixture in your vehicle is extremely important. When left unchecked, the engine will begin to act up and bring you problems while you’re on the road. If you have a broken PCV hose in your ride, the best thing that you can do is replace it right away. Changing the component with a new one will surely get your vehicle back on track. To help you find the right replacement hose, here are some of the things that you need to consider before making your purchase.

Location

A PCV hose can either be located at the driver or passenger’s side of the vehicle. So before you buy a replacement component, double-check if it will fit your vehicle. Read the product description very carefully to ensure that you get the one that will perfectly install in the driver or passenger’s side of your ride.

Fit

When it comes to fit, always choose direct fit products versus universal ones. Though direct fit hoses may cost a little more, they’re surely good investments because they’ll make your DIY project a whole lot easier and faster.

Price

To make sure that you get a good replacement PCV hose from a brand that you can trust, be prepared to spend around $50 or even less. PCV hoses are relatively inexpensive so they won’t put a hole in your pocket.

How to Replace a PCV Hose

You can always replace the PCV hose even if it’s not yet broken to ensure optimum engine performance. In fact, you can replace it every time you change the air filter to maintain the positive ventilation within your engine. Here’s a short and general guide that will help you get started with the job.

Difficulty level: Moderate

Things that you’ll need:

  • Metric socket and ratchet set
  • Jack and jack stands or vehicle ramps
  • Hose clamp

Step 1: To begin, jack up the front side of your car and support the vehicle at the lower control arms my putting jack stands. On the other hand, you can also use a vehicle ramp to raise the front of the car.

Step 2: Next, access the oil pain by sliding underneath the vehicle. Then, look for the PCV port tube, that’s located on the side of the oil pan.

Step 3: Once you’ve located it, use the hose clamp by sliding it in over the end of the PCV hose. Once it’s in, push the clamp up to the hose to prevent it from falling during the process.

Step 4: Next, slide the end of the hose over the PCV port tube and do this until it reaches the side of the oil pan.

Step 5: Then, slide the hose clamp over the hose until the base of the oil pan. Once it reaches this position, tighten the clamp according to torque requirement in your vehicle. It would be best to consult your vehicle manual to know the right torque.

Step 6: Next, let the tube pass through the driver’s side of the engine and then lower the raised side of the vehicle.

Step 7: After that, raise the hood of the vehicle and access the PCV valve that’s behind the cover located in the uppermost part of the engine. This should be right on top of the engine block.

Step 8: Then, connect the PCV hose to the PCV valve and secure it in place by attaching it to the plastic clamps or brackets that were made to hold it in place. These clamps and brackets are designed to keep the hose away from engine components that tend to get hot.
