I noticed transmission fluid leaking from the passenger side axle shaft output of my Pontiac Phoenix. Is this a transmission issue? How can I fix this?

This is a common problem not just for Pontiac Phoenix vehicles but for older vehicles in general. Once the transmission oil leaks out of the passenger axle shaft, it is usually a sign of a worn axle shaft seal. This is brought about by the constant wobbling of the CV shaft—the first part affected once the inner surface of the transmission wears out—damaging the seal in the process.

Determine the source of the leak by performing a visual inspection—remove the shaft out of the passenger side. Check the shaft; if you notice that it wobbles a lot more than the shaft in the driver side, then, it is probably the cause of the leak. If it looks worn out, simply get an aftermarket replacement and install it on the axle shaft.

A guy at an auto shop, however, says I need to tune up my carburetor further to increase accuracy in calibration so it would pass the smog inspections in our area. I think he's just trying to sell me his services, but I'm still concerned. Should I go for it?

Most of the "set ups" done for old vehicles such as changing the timing marker to make it appear that it is in zero and adding other emissions control devices would already be illegal in all 50 states, so if you have done any of these on your car, it is likely doomed to fail in the first place. Check the state laws in your area and contact DMV to make sure your car still has a chance at passing the inspection before spending on further modifications.
