Pontiac Pursuit: Maintaining the Brakes’ Good Condition

You need a reliable braking system to make sure that even with all the power and speed, you can have full control of your vehicle. Whenever you step on the brake pedal, the vehicle should be able to slow down or stop quickly. To make sure that your Pontiac Pursuit's brakes will be responsive, you need to perform some essential brake maintenance checks. Here's a short list:

  • Check your brake fluid.

Sometimes, we tend to focus more on the brake pads and rotors and forget to check the brake fluid. But as time goes by, the fluid can get contaminated. You can usually tell by the color. If it's already dark or murky, well that's your cue. It's time to change the fluid. Aside from the condition of the fluid, also take note of the brake fluid level. A brake fluid drop usually means that there's a brake problem. Due to worn-out disc brakes, for instance, the fluid could be displaced into the brake calipers. If the brake fluid level is low, check the brake lines for leaks and cracks. Also inspect the other brake parts, such as the master cylinder, for any sign of wear or damage. If there's air in the system, you have to bleed the brake lines or flush the system.

  • Check the most crucial brake parts.

Among the most crucial brake parts are the pads, rotors, and calipers. From time to time or whenever there's a chance, take a close look at your brake pads and rotors. Don't let the brake pads get too thin or wear out completely as this can ruin the rotors. Worn-out pads can cause rough spots and uneven grooves on the surface, leading to poor braking performance. Don't wait for the symptoms to surface. Check if the brake pads have exceeded the preferred thickness by the manufacturer. Also see if the rotors need turning or have to be replaced. If the rotors are warped or scored, then they need to be fixed right away. Also see to it that the calipers are still in good condition. Have your brake system inspected regularly to spot any trouble early on. Enjoy optimum braking power and good stopping distance by making sure that the system doesn't have any leak and that all lines and mechanical brake parts are working right.

  • Check your vehicle manual for the recommended brake service.

Don't play with fire. You wouldn't want to have unresponsive brakes while on the road. This can pose danger not only to you but also to other motorists. Right before you suffer from brake fades or notice that your vehicle pulls to one side when braking, you should have your brakes thoroughly inspected. Stick to the recommended brake service and maintenance by the manufacturer. This will help save you from costly brake repairs in the future. Aside from the brake pads, calipers, and rotors, you should also have the other brake parts checked. These include the brake shoes, hoses, and other mechanical parts. Consult the user manual for the specifics such as the specified brake pad thickness and other critical brake system information.
