Power Steering Seal Guides

Replacing Your Power Steering Seal the Easy Way

Through time, your power steering seal may wear, leaving your steering and handling abilities significantly impaired. Lucky for you, replacing your power steering seal is essentially a simple job. It will require you to get your hands dirty, but you'll be able to complete the job with the help of some basic tools. Just follow these steps and you'll have your ride's performance as good as new.

Difficulty Level: Moderate

Tools you'll need:

  • Safety gloves
  • Shop rag
  • Hand pump siphon
  • Ratchet and socket
  • Replacement power steering seal
  • Screwdriver

Before you begin- Put on safety gloves for this project for optimum protection. Also, keep your ride parked on a level surface and have your owner's manual at hand for reference.

Step 1: Open up the hood and disconnect the negative battery lead.

Step 2: Remove the power steering fluid from the steering pump reservoir using a hand pump siphon.

Step 3: Use a ratchet and socket to remove the pressure hose from the steering pump and the return hose from the reservoir.

Step 4: Loosen the adjusting bolt and locking nut bolt from the power steering belt tensioner and remove the steering pump belt from the pulley.

Step 5: Remove the power steering pump mounting bolts and then insert a screwdriver between the steering pump and tensioner bracket..

Step 6: Push the sleeve on the tensioner bracket and remove the steering pump from the engine compartment.

Step 7: From here, you'll start working solely on your power steering pump. Take a screwdriver and use it to pry out the power steering seal.

Step 8: Clean off the component with a shop rag and insert the new seal. Use a screwdriver to push it into place.

Step 9: From there, re-install the power steering pump, and re-assemble all of the components you disassembled.

Step 10: Reconnect the negative battery lead, close the hood, and you're all set.
