- The ability to adjust the driver’s seat is important. This will ensure that you can comfortably reach for the pedal while driving.

What could bug you more than having an uncomfortable or faulty seat during a lengthy drive? Ride comfortability is an important aspect of your overall driving experience that you should not take for granted. When talking about comfortability, one important component you should not miss are your car seats.
These seats contribute a lot to the look and feel of your interior. Aside from that, did you know that car seats are also an important factor in keeping you and your passengers’ safe while on the road? In fact, there is a National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act established in 1996 that aims to ensure that all automobile car seats comply with a certain standard.
A standard car seat is designed to support your buttocks, lower and upper back, as well as your head. Most of them have three main parts: the squab, cushion, and headrest. At present, the automotive seating system has evolved. With the introduction of power car seats in the market, there are a lot of other seat components that come into play such as an electric motor and a seat switch.
What is a seat switch and how does it function?
A manual car seat usually comes with a lever-like mechanism that can adjust the position of your driver’s seat. In power seats, however, this is different. Since power seats are automatic seats, the seat gets adjusted according to your preference using a seat switch or several seat switches, depending on your vehicle’s year, make, and model.
The seat switch or seat control switch controls the position of the driver’s seat. In some models, the front passenger seat also has this control switch, especially if the seat also classifies as a power seat. Pressing the switch will allow you to move the driver’s seat back and forth. This adjustment is very important, especially when you often switch drivers or switch cars. Having the capability to adjust your driver’s seat back and forth ensures that the driving can comfortably reach the pedal. In some more advanced power seats, it also allows you to adjust the lumbar support.
The number of buttons in your switch and how it looks will depend on the type of power seat installed in your vehicle Usually, they look and feel similar to the rest of car switches just like the ones found on the armrest for your car windows. Most modern cars come installed with either 6-way or eight-way power seats. Usually, power seats get classified by the number of ways you can adjust the seat. For example, one power seat variant can only adjust distance, tilt or recline while other variants have the capability to rotate seats or move the seat cushion from front and back. The type of power seat installed in your vehicle will depend on its year, make, and model.
Seat switches usually connect to a power seat motor that gives electricity to your power seats but what happens if your switch stops working? It is important for you to recognize the symptoms of a failing seat switch earlier. The sooner you diagnose the problem, the easier it is to get fixed. Again, who would want to get caught up with a faulty seat during a long drive?
What are the symptoms of a failing switch?
Here are a few symptoms that could indicate that something is wrong with your power seat switch:
Slowly moving seat
One of the first signs that something is wrong with your seat switch is slow movement when pressing the switch. In some cases, your seat can get jammed. Although this can stem from a failing switch, there are other things to consider such as unstable electric current due to faulty or burnt wirings or an item stuck under the seat.
Loose switch buttons
This is the most obvious sign that your switch needs replacement. A loose switch button may become disconnected to the whole assembly, causing your power seat mechanism to fail. If your seat switches feel loose or unresponsive, contact your trusted mechanic and have it replaced right away.
The seat does not move completely
If the seat does not move at all when pressing the switch, this can be a sign that your seat switch has completely failed. This can also be a sign of a failed or burnt fuse, wiring, or contacts.
There are many reasons your power seat may stop working. Although seat switches can be one of them, there are other components such as the motor, fuse, and different electrical wirings that may also get damaged. If you notice anything wrong with your power seat, it is best to have it checked by a trusted professional. They can further diagnose the symptoms and have the faulty part fixed or replaced right away.
How much does a seat switch replacement cost?
Usually, a seat switch can cause around $50 to $250. Before buying one, identify the type of power seat installed in your vehicle. You also have to choose if the switch is for the driver or front passenger power seat. Don’t forget to consult your vehicle manual or your trusted mechanic before placing an order.

DIY Assignment: Replacing a Damaged Seat Switch
Power seats provide the ultimate comfort and convenience during long travels. Instead of just staying in one position for hours, you can actually adjust your seat whichever way you like. You can raise, lower, and even tilt its position by simply pressing the seat switch located on the side. If your seats no longer adjust no matter how many times you push the button, then the seat switch is probably damaged. Replace it right away before your power seat becomes stuck in just one position. Follow the steps below in replacing a faulty seat switch.
Difficulty level: Easy
Tools that you'll need:
Step 1: Before you can access the seat switch, you need to remove your seat first. Take off the plastic covers protecting the seat bolts. Next, remove the four bolts securing the seat rails to the floor.
Step 2: Adjust the seat accordingly so that you can reach the seat switch more easily. If you want to work on the seat switch outside the car, you can disconnect the wiring under the seat and pull it out of your vehicle. You can also do the replacement without removing the car seat. Just tilt it at a certain angle that will make it easy for you to install a new switch.
Step 3: Locate the plastic panel covering the switch. Use a screwdriver to take off the screws holding the cover in place. Remove the cover and unclip the wiring harness connected to the seat switch. Detach the harness from the seat as well.
Step 4: Lift the seat cushion. You only need to loosen one bolt to detach the front edge of the cushion from the frame. You can now easily remove the busted switch and connector.
Step 5: Install a new seat switch and reconnect the wiring harness. Cover up the switch with the plastic panel you removed earlier and tighten all screws to secure the assembly. Try adjusting your power seat to test the new switch.
