FAQs—Subaru WRX

My hood is not locking completely. I have no problem opening it, but it won't close properly. What could be causing this problem, and is there an easy way to fix it? Please help.

There are a few probable reasons your hood is unable to close and lock properly. The hood is closed through a latch operated by a spring and cable. There are instances when the cable seizes up, and this is something that you'll be able to see easily if the hood is open. If this is the problem, you can use WD40 to free up the cable. If the cable is broken, then you will have to replace it with a new one. Now there are cases when the problem is simply due to misalignment between the spring on the hood and the latch. Check if this is the case so that you can try to do some adjustments to restore proper alignment.

I'm working on getting more power from my car engine, and a friend is suggesting an upgrade to a dual exhaust. How does this system work, and what other benefits can I expect from this kind of upgrade?

A dual exhaust system is simply just that—an exhaust system with dual components and twice its performing capacity. The logic behind this is simple: to allow exhaust gases to flow faster and more smoothly because they are now provided with two paths instead of just one, therefore freeing the engine of exhaust more efficiently so that it can continue to produce power at a faster rate. If there's one thing to remember when upgrading to a dual exhaust for more horsepower output, it's that you must ensure the engine is also upgraded to make it capable of producing a high amount of energy. Otherwise, the dual exhaust won't make any difference if the engine's performance is average. What it can do is simply to free up the combustion chambers so the engine can do their work without much interference from the exhaust gases.

I'm looking to get some added floor protection to my Subaru WRX, but I'm torn between a carpet floor mat and a rubber floor mat. I like the lush look of carpet, but I'm not sure if it will be able to offer the level of protection I need in my car. What would you suggest?

When it comes to regular dirt such as debris from your shoes, carpet floor mats and rubber floor mats offer the same level of protection. When it comes to liquid, however, rubber floor mats can handle this better. You can still enjoy a carpet floor mat in your car if you're driving in sunny weather—the dirt you carry inside your vehicle will be trapped between the fiber of the mats and can be easily vacuumed. The carpet material is also something you can enjoy in your ride. However, switch to a rubber mat in the winter or rainy months for improved protection. Rubber will guarantee that water and snow will be off your metal floor during harsh weather.

Subaru WRX: A Car with Great Achievement

The Subaru WRX first arrived in the market in 1992 as a turbocharged version of the Impreza, hence the designation Subaru Impreza WRX. Impreza means “achievement” in Italian while WRX stands for World Rally eXperimental. The Impreza WRX was first offered in Japan and slowly found its way to Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.

Finally, after almost a decade of stay in the Japanese market, the Subaru WRX made its way to the North American market. Though it took the car around ten years to get into the U.S. market, it had successfully bagged the 2006-2007 Golden Icon Award for best sedan.

1992: The first Subaru WRX

The Impreza had been an international superstar not just on the racetrack but also on the streets, so the marquee needed to take huge strides just to make the Impreza WRX more powerful and faster than the other already-impressive Impreza variants. All WRX versions are fitted with rally-inspired technology, including stiffer suspension, all wheel drive, as well as turbocharged four-cylinder engines.

Subaru also launched the STI (Subaru Tecnica International) versions of the WRX in Japan in 1994. These were basically upgraded versions of the standard WRX. They were fitted with blueprinted performance-tuned suspension, transmissions, and powertrains, which make these vehicles extremely successful in rallies and famous among street racers.

2000: The “New Age” Impreza WRX

It was in August 2000 when the “New Age” Impreza was introduced in Japan. These Imprezas came larger than their predecessors—the sedan had an additional width of 40 millimeters while the hatchback was larger than the previous iteration by only 5 millimeters. Since the 2000 model year, the WRX derived power from a 2.0-liter boxer engine until 2005, when this was replaced by the 2.5-liter turbocharged powertrain.

The turbocharged Subaru WRX was offered in various specifications as well as in limited edition variants. Year by year, Subaru also made sure that the WRX and STI got updates in cosmetics, mechanical components, interior, and other aspects to uphold its outstanding reputation in handling and performance.

2010: Special edition and Cosworth WRX STI

For model year 2010, Subaru launched the WRX Special Edition, which was actually Impreza WRX STI’s version for the North American market. This model sported thicker stabilizer bar for improved handling, stiffer suspension, seven twin-spokes gray 18-inch alloy wheels, four-speaker stereo, as well as 10-speaker premium audio.

That same year, the limited edition of the Impreza WRX STI for UK market was also introduced. It was named Cosworth WRX STI as it was fitted with Cosworth-tuned version of the standard STI engine. This version also came with “Cosworth” emblem on the car’s lower mesh grille, rear waist spoiler, 18-inch alloy wheels, leather seats, as well as floor mats with “Coswort” badge.
