Replace Your Car's T-Belt Tension Adjuster the Easy Way

Step 1: Jack the car up and secure the frame on the jack stands.
Step 2: Using the tire iron, remove either the right or left wheel. Work on one wheel at a time. Don't forget to remove the black plastic shield or cover located under the car.
Step 3: Lift the spark plug cover with an extension ratchet. Place the cover in a clean and safe area.
Step 4: Remove the spark plugs one by one. Use a pen to mark the plugs and the corresponding terminal with number one to four, so you can remember how to put them back after changing the t-belt. Put the spark plugs in a dry place to prevent damaging them.
Step 5: Loosen both the pivot bolt and the pinch bolt that hold the t-belt tension adjuster to the power steering pump. Sway the pump slowly until the belt comes out so you can pull it.
Step 6: Unhook the alternator belt. Be patient in swinging the alternator until the belt is released. Do not pull the belt forcibly.
Step 7: Move to the driver's side of the car and lift that part up. Remove the upper timing belt cover. Unsnap it by releasing the two plastic latches that keep it in place.
Step 8: Tilt the crank pulley until the spark plug cable marked number one aligns with the car's distributor rotor. Proper alignment is very important so be keen on this. The top piston should be placed top dead center or TDC in order to install the new t-bet tension adjuster.
Step 9: Take the ratchet and the socket to unscrew the bolts that attach the crank pulley. Find the Woodruff key, which looks like a round metal located inside the crank pulley. Take that out then remove the crank pulley from the Civic. Take care of these parts for they are very small.
Step 10: You can now see the t-belt tension adjuster. Remove the bolts to release it then remove the timing belt if you also need to replace it.
Step 11: Attach the new timing belt and t-belt tension adjuster. Secure the bolts to hold the t-belt firmly. Follow the procedures in reverse order to put back all the components you've taken out of your Honda Civic.
