Quick Tips to Fix Your Nissan Tail Light
Tail lights ensure safety of passengers and alert other motorists and pedestrians of the position of the vehicle in the dark as well as when the vehicle is braking to avoid collisions. A broken tail light can cause a lot of problems such as traffic penalties and accidents. To save on mechanic service costs, you may want to fix your broken Nissan tail light yourself. Though repairing a tail light assembly can be intimidating for first-timers, it is relatively easy to do and needs only basic tools.
Difficulty level: Easy
Things you'll need:
- Socket or ratchet wrench
- Flathead screwdriver
- New tail light cover, lens, or assembly
Step 1:Assess which part of the tail light is broken: light cover, bulb, or whole assembly. Depending on the severity of the damage, you may only fix the cover or bulb rather than replacing the whole tail light assembly.
Step 2:To fix a broken tail light cover, find the screws and bolts by popping open the trunk. These screws and bolts may be located inside the trunk or at the side of your Nissan tail light assembly, which is on the outside of the trunk. Use appropriate screwdriver or a socket wrench to loosen the screws and bolts. Make sure to store them safely to avoid losing them during repair. You may need to soften the glue if the cover is glued to the assembly besides being bolted into position. You can soften the glue by putting it in a warm oven. Then, use a flathead screwdriver to pry the lens from the tail light assembly.
Step 3:There are 3 quick options to repair a broken cover: by repair tape, glue, or repair kit. Considered the cheapest and fastest way, a repair tape can be used to fix a broken light. Choose from the available colors: clear, red, and yellow. Apply carefully and properly to keep off water from going into the tail light assembly. You can also use adhesive to glue back together the broken cover components. Remove the tail light cover before gluing so you can seal the crack precisely. Make sure to remove any water, dirt, grease, and residue before application. Wait for the glue to thoroughly dry before putting back the repaired tail light cover. If you opt to purchase a repair kit, carefully apply the epoxy and wait for it to completely dry.
Step 4:To reach and repair the assembly, take out the hooks or fasteners that hold the trunk lining over the tail light fitting area while the trunk is open. Slowly pull back the molded trunk lining.
Step 5:Detach the wiring harness of the Nissan tail light and remove the connection from its mounting fastener on the frame. Work loose and take out the bolts, which hold the tail light to the vehicle.
Step 6:Now carefully pull the tail light assembly from the vehicle. Check the wiring connection and replace as needed. Change the bulb also if necessary. Clean the socket and lens before placing back the fixed assembly.
Step 7:Place back the repaired tail light assembly and tighten its bolts and screws. Reconnect the wiring harness and attach it to the vehicle using the clips. Refasten the trunk lining.
Step 8:Test the repaired Nissan tail light.
