How to Install a Truck Bed Rack Mount Kit
As an owner of a pickup truck, nothing beats having wider space in your truck bed to haul more cargo. While maintaining your truck can be a tough job, it is also wise to invest on something that can enhance the functionality of your vehicle. When you can afford it, purchase a truck bed rack mount kit to further improve the hauling capacity of your vehicle. Installation is so easy, that you can do it on your own. You just need the right tools.
Difficulty level: Moderate
What you'll need:
- Protective glasses
- Wrench set
- Small hammer
- Scissors or utility knife
- Replacement truck bed rack mount kit
Step 1: Assemble all threaded clamps and alignment plates. Loop a cord around the clamp plate so the welded side with the threaded hole will be at the bottom. Add the alignment plates equally, and make sure that they are in place. Tie a knot on top of the cord.
Step 2: Work on the driver's side rack rail first. Position the rack rail with warning decal near the tailgate end of the box, with the long-slotted holes at the bottom. Place the rail on top of the box rail with slotted holes at the center across stake pockets.
Step 3: Align the front of rail close to the front edge of the box. Make sure to not allow the rail to go beyond the front edge of the box.
Step 4: Put the clamp plate on cord assembly to drop the welded side down through a slot in the rail so that it will fall into the stake pocket. Hold the cord while doing this to ensure proper alignment of the plates. Grind off the excess materials when stake pockets are deformed.
Step 5: Proceed with dropping of each alignment plate one by one through the slot and into the stake pocket. Hold the cord firmly while jiggling it until the clamp and plates align with the stake pocket.
Step 6: Pull the cord continuously until all the plates and clamp are all held up against the bottom of the stake pocket and rail.
Step 7: Place a flat washer over the hole and insert a hex head bolt into the threaded clamp inside the stake pocket. Make sure that all alignment plates are aligned with stake pocket. Remove cord.
Step 8: Close the tailgate closely to check if it will not rub against the rack rail when it is closed. Adjust the rack rail if needed. When you are confident with their alignment, tighten all clamp bolts fully. Perform the same process for the rack rail on the passenger side of the box.
Step 9: Tighten all cross bar hex head bolts by turning them completely. Check all bolts periodically, and tighten them as needed.
In less than an hour, you can install your truck bed rack mount kit with ease. If you are not sure on how to install it, you can always refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for further instructions. You may also use some help if you can afford to have an assistant to help you out.
