Volvo S80 Guides

Perfect for the American businessman, the Volvo S80 is a mid-size executive sedan that was first launched in 1998 and is still in production up to today. It has a sleek build that can accommodate up to five passengers. This is an ideal car if you're going to use it both for a business trip or a drive to the beach with your wife and kids.

The Volvo S80 has a distinctive design with luxurious interiorwhat more can you ask for? Since Volvos have a reputation for being a safe vehicle compared to the others, this specific model is not an exception to that image. The 2002 S80 T6 is equipped with an engine that belts out 268 horsepower at 5,400 rpm. It also has an extraordinary 280 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,000rpm. Even with its sleek build, the engine is indeed a powerful one. The inside is very comfortable too. The backseat has spacious legroom, perfect for your kids to be in comfort even on long drives. It is very easy to handle and is an ideal automobile for the family.

Even with all the great features on the S80, what are these all about if some parts are busted? Even though the 2002 model was manufactured years back and there are still some being driven on the streets today, it's inevitable for it to break down. Check on your components if there are some that have worn out such as the 2002 Volvo S80 2.91L T6 front strut. Should this be busted, make sure you have it replaced right away; otherwise, handling your vehicle won't be as easy and safe to drive. If you want to keep driving your Volvo S80 for a longer time, then regularly check up on the units and have the broken parts replaced with new ones right away.

Volvo S80 Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Engine‘s Top Performance

The Volvo S80 is a luxury sedan with a design that spurned high-end luxury and performance to favor cutting-edge safety and interior technology. It may not be a premium-brand car with a more upscale feel, but you can be sure that you are driving one of the safest cars your money can buy. It's a sensible option for most car buyers. As an owner of the S80, you have to keep your vehicle properly maintained to maximize your investment. Your vehicle's engine should be among your top priority when it comes to maintenance if you want top performance from it all the time. If you think there's something different about how your car is running, you better check it and know what the problem is as soon as possible. Below are some tips on how you can keep your Volvo S80 at its most efficient:

  • Never ignore warning lights such as a Check Engine Light (CEL).

When your Check Engine Light comes on, it is an indicator of a potential engine trouble. It illuminates when it is detecting engine issues due to loss of power. Never ignore it, otherwise the problem could persist and cause even more damage. So why is your CEL burning bright? One reason for a CEL is when your car's oxygen (O2) sensor failed. Faulty sensors can cause damage to your spark plugs as well as make your engine burn more fuel than necessary. If your CEL is caused by a faulty sensor, have it replaced at once. An activated CEL can also be due to a loose, missing, or damaged gas cap. This cap is the one that seals the fuel system and helps maintain pressure in the fuel tank. Fuel evaporation and fuel loss is the result of unchecked gas cap problem, so better to have it replaced on time. Other causes of CEL are damaged catalytic converter, MAF (mass airflow sensor), and spark plugs. They will need replacement in order to address the problem. If the CEL persists and all the above problems have already been addressed, it's time to get an engine diagnostic service from a reputable mechanic/service center.

  • Always check the fuel injectors and catalytic converter.

Your Volvo S80, like any other vehicle, is equipped with an internal combustion engine with a four-stroke combustion cycle. This is what converts the gasoline into power needed for acceleration. These four strokes are the intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust. If any of these four strokes encountered problem, the tendency is for your car to loss power or acceleration. Among the things that you need to check when your vehicle losses power are the fuel injectors. Make sure they are properly connected and clean. If your car losses power when accelerating or has poor acceleration, the culprit could be the catalytic converter. A dirty and clogged catalytic converter will have a hard time letting exhaust gases get through. When air can't get out of the rear end, it also can't come in, so the engine dies due to lack of air for the fuel/air mixture. The best thing for you to do is to have this component serviced immediately.

  • Check engine noises at once.

You should not be hearing any noise coming from your engine while you are driving. Sometimes, when your engine is not yet warm, you may hear a piston knock, but it should disappear after revving up the engine. However, if you hear knocking, backfiring, hissing, popping, or spitting sounds while driving; it may be time to check under the hood for any combustion abnormality. There are several reasons why you could be hearing noises coming off the engine, and one of them is low oil pressure. Make sure that the oil pressure in the sending unit port is okay. If pressure is fine but noises are persisting, you might need to replace the sending unit. A knocking sound in the spark plugs, on the other hand, can be due to low octane fuel, overadvanced ignition timing or carbon buildup in the combustion chambers. Check the ignition, combustion chambers, and fuel to rule out the problem. Inspect the torque converter bolts and have them repaired if they are the reason for the noises.

A Sedan Like No Other: Volvo S80’s 14 Years of Unparalleled Posh, Performance, and Protection

The sedan market is a jungle full of competent and aggressive contenders. Although it is not really one of the mainstream choices, the Volvo S80 is considered to be one of the ‘fittest’ options that were fortunate enough to survive the stiff competition in the sedan market. The S80 is regarded as the largest among all the sedan offerings of the Swedish car company. This mid-size wonder boasts of its world-class luxury, top-notch performance, and unmatched safety and protection features, which are definitely the reasons why the Volvo S80 spawned two successful generations.

Excellent since day one: first generation (1998-2006)

Since its debut in 1998, the Volvo S80 has been known to be one of the most advanced vehicles in terms of its safety features and technological innovations. Aside from the fact that it is very spacious, its latest GPS navigation system, top-of-the-line interior upholstery, and excellent audio and entertainment systems provide its passengers the luxurious and comfortable driving experience they expect from all Volvo vehicles. The original S80 takes pride in its safety features, which include the Whiplash and Side Impact Protection Systems.

Built on the P2 platform, the Volvo S80 was initially offered in four powerful engine variants. The engine options include the 2.5-liter Turbocharged Direct Injection diesel engine from Volkswagen, the 2.4-liter five-cylinder engine, the 2.9-liter six-cylinder engine, and the T6 engine. The 2.4-liter engine was also offered in an LPG and CNG version. Because of the unique transverse mounting of the S80’s straight-six engine, Volvo developed its own manual gearbox known as the M65.

Originally, the S80 was offered in a front-wheel drive system. When the year 2000 came, a 2.5-liter T engine was offered with an all-wheel drive system as an option. Volvo’s premier sedan offering received its first major makeover in 2003 for the 2004 model year as it underwent interior and exterior modifications, which was highly evident in its redesigned grille and fascia.

Number one in safety: second generation (2006-Present)

The second generation Volvo S80 took its top-notch safety and protection features from the original model and improved it further for the succeeding model years. The company’s efforts paid off as the S80 received the IIHS Top Safety Pick Award in overall safety protection for the year 2007. The following year, the pride of Volvo sedans bagged yet another Top Safety Award from the same institution. These prestigious recognitions can be attributed to the Volvo S80’s world-class safety systems like the new Adaptive Cruise Control, Ready Alert Brakes, Collision Warning and Brake Support, Lane Departure Warning, and Blind Spot Information System.

The latest S80 models also received new engine variants like the 4.4-liter V8 engine with a four-wheel drive option and the 3.2-liter straight-six engine. Aside from the new safety features and engine range, it also received the Personal Car Communicator remote control as an option as well as the latest Ford EUCD P24 platform. The first ever Volvo sedan to bear the compact and transversely fitted V8 engine with 311 horsepower, the S80 also features a boron steel material for its four catalytic converters.

The upscale variant and the future of S80

The luxurious S80 has been modified and used many times as official state cars, limousines, and ambulances. One of the most high-profile customers of the Volvo S80 is the King of Sweden. In addition to the abovementioned versions, a long-wheelbase variant was also built by the Volvo division in China. This 2011 limousine version is called the Volvo S80L.

This first-class tradition of Volvo S80’s elegance, superior performance, and safety is continued through the 2012 model, which is proudly equipped with the latest Active Bending Lights, Intelligent Driver Information System, Tire Pressure Monitoring System, Anti-submarining protection, Inflatable curtain, and many others.
