Ford Motor Co. is one of the largest and most successful American automakers in the world. No other brand comes close to the loyalty inspired by the Blue Oval in its drivers. Ford has dominated the market thanks to its line of powerful and reliable trucks for much of its hundred-year history. As more Ford vehicles stay on the road for longer than intended, parts are expected to wear out and require repair. One part that may need to be replaced after some time is the Ford window regulator.

Who manufactures genuine Ford parts?

Motorcraft is Ford’s official parts manufacturing arm. It was officially launched in the 1950s but was replaced by Autolite for a few years. When the latter branched off as an independent entity in the 1970s, Ford revived Motorcraft and has since used the company to manufacture genuine Ford parts.

Like other automakers, Ford relies on a wide network of third-party manufacturers to produce parts, components, and systems that they do not manufacture in-house. These companies are referred to as OEMs or Original Equipment Manufacturers. Some of Ford’s top suppliers are Valeo Electric and Electronic Systems, NHK Spring, Summit Plastics, and more.

OEM vs. OE Replacement Ford window regulators

You may have encountered the terms OEM and OE replacement while shopping for a Ford window regulator. While these two categories are remarkably similar, they have a few differences that you should know about.

Original Equipment Manufacturer or OEM window regulators are those made by Motorcraft or any of the automaker’s licensed third-party suppliers. These parts are typically sold at Ford dealerships and authorized retailers. Since they bear the Ford brand, these window regulators usually cost more compared to other brands.

Original Equipment or OE replacement window regulators are manufactured by any other company that is not affiliated with Ford. That’s the only significant difference between the two. These parts are designed to fit and perform the same as OEM parts. However, they are generally more affordable than the latter.

Are aftermarket Ford window regulators as good as OEM?

Aftermarket Ford window regulators can be as good as OEM. These parts are designed to be functionally equivalent to genuine parts. For drivers who aren’t necessarily brand-conscious, this is a win-win because you can get the same quality for a fraction of the cost of an OEM part. To ensure the quality of OE replacement parts, it helps to purchase them from reputable retailers such as CarParts.com.

Another advantage of choosing OE replacement window regulators is that you have more choice when it comes to selecting where to purchase this part. Since there are several aftermarket parts companies manufacturing similar parts, these are more widely available and can be shipped to your doorstep faster than placing an order through a dealership.

How much does a Ford window regulator replacement cost?

How much you’ll need to spend on a window regulator replacement varies depending on your vehicle’s specific model year. Excluding window regulator repair costs, an OE replacement window regulator may cost you around $40. These are sold individually, in sets of two to four, or as part of a kit.

CarParts.com carries a wide selection of Ford window regulators for different model years. To find the right one for your vehicle, you may use our website’s search filter. Simply select the correct year, make, and model to narrow down the results to all compatible parts.

7 Easy Steps on How to Diagnose and Install a Ford Window Regulator

Your window regulator is the part of your vehicle that's directly responsible for raising and lowering your car's window glass. It is connected either to a crank or an electric motor. And because of its mechanical nature, the regulator is prone to wearing out over time. Any broken or worn-out window regulator must be replaced as soon as possible. A Ford window regulator can be detached and repaired without much hassle. Typically, repairing the window or replacing some of its parts could cost you $300 or more. If you want to save money, you can work on the part by yourself. Many Ford vehicles have power windows installed while others offer regular manual windows. The automatic windows function by using an electric fuse, window motor, window regulator, and window switches. Every car may be different but you can easily remove and replace the window regulator with a new one simply by following the steps below:

Required skill level: Easy

Needed tools and materials

  1. Flat screwdriver
  2. Masking tape
  3. Socket set
  4. Replacement window regulator

Detaching the door panel

To start, you need to remove the panel that is connected to the door. Force open all panels that are secured onto the door panel, such as the switch panel and the door handle panel. Take good care when removing them because they can easily crack when pressure is applied.

Working on the switch panel

After detaching the switch panel, disengage the electric adapter plug or connector found beneath the switch panel. Afterwards, you will need to test this switch panel to ensure that there are no hitches in the electric circuit.

Removing the door panel

With the help of a socket tool, unscrew all bolts that secure the panel to the door. When the bolts are removed, push the panel away from the door. Remove with caution the other electric connectors that are lodged between the panel and the door so that the panel comes off without any problems. Afterwards, take out any insulation in between the door and the panel.

Positioning the window

Use masking tape to hold the window glass in place. Use tape over the door frame and the side of the glass so that it's held in place securely.

Removing the window regulator

Unscrew all mounting bolts and screws that keep the window regulator in position. After detaching the window regulator rail, make sure that the mounts, bolts, and other components of the new regulator that you are going to install match those of the old one.

Replacing the window regulator

Swap the old regulator with the new one, and secure all bolts and screws. Carefully plug in the connectors that were previously disconnected and reinstall the door insulation. Return the panel to the door and put in the screws. Check the window to ensure that it can be easily raised and lowered.

Diagnosing other problems

If the motor stops working or a short circuit happens after changing the window regulator, check the electrical system that powers the automatic windows. It is recommended that a Ford repair specialist should look into your electrical system as it can be quite dangerous to work on it if you don't have the expertise.
