Nissan Window Regulator Articles

There are a lot of reasons why most car buyers would prefer a new car over an old one. Aside from the looks, new cars seem to have a lot more to offer than the cars of the past. Although some vintage cars offers extremely large and powerful engines, current vehicle engines of comparable sizes proves to be more powerful and refined. Aside from these, new vehicles offer a lot of features and amenities that one can hardly find on older vehicles. Current vehicles are filled with a lot of controls that are more responsive and offer a lot of features that are fully automatic.

One of the features that current vehicles offer today are the power windows, or power window regulators, as opposed to the manual window regulators of older cars. While both perform the same basic functions, power window regulators are preferred over manual window regulators as the former performs its function at a simple touch of a button. Manual window regulators, though, are easier to replace, and much cheaper, compared to the costly and complicated power window regulator.

New Nissan vehicles are all equipped with power window regulators, along with the various automatic components they have like power door locks, power seats and other automatic controls. This type of regulator is installed beneath the vehicle's doors, with the controls usually located on the same door or on the dashboard near the driver seat. A small electric motor attached to a worm gear and various other spur gears usually controls the movement of the power windows. This motor, on the other hand, is controlled by an electronic module that may be installed on any part of your vehicle. What makes power window regulators a bit complicated is the way the different components are arranged beneath the car doors.
Old Nissan vehicles, on the other hand, are mostly equipped with the manual type of window regulators. These window regulators basically shares the same basic components used by the power window regulators, but their arrangement and layout are less complicated. Manual window regulators are also controlled using crank handles instead of the electric motor used on power models.

Since new Nissan vehicles are equipped only with power windows, the type of Nissan window regulators that you can find from your Nissan dealer are the power or automatic types. If you happen to own an older car and need to replace its manual Nissan window regulators with a new one, a good source for these manual regulators are aftermarket parts dealers that you can find in your area or over the Internet. Most aftermarket part dealers also offers power window regulators for the new Nissan vehicles.

Tips to Guide You in Finding the Right Nissan Window Regulator

Responsible for operating your vehicle window going up or down, the Nissan window regulator is an important mechanical assembly to ensure your vehicle windows work properly and efficiently. When getting a new window regulator, keep in mind the following guidelines:

Determine the appropriate type

Nissan window regulators are available in two main types: scissor-type and cable type.

  • Scissor-type regulator:With this type of window regulator, the main arm is intersected by a smaller secondary arm, which moves along a groove in the window tray as the window slides up and down. The scissor-type regulator has a power motor installed and is built with all metal parts. Most of the time, this regulator type can be found in classic vehicles as most older vehicle models are ran by a manual hand winding. In cases wherein the scissor-type assembly is power-operated, the regulator is then fitted with a gear that engages with the teeth to move the arms. If there is no power motor, a manual crank lever works instead. Usually a regulator malfunctions when the wheels at the arm ends are worn out and split off, making the window glass tilt at an angle inside the door. On the other hand, when you start hearing some noises and the glass rattles irregularly, the center hinge between the two arms may have broken down.
  • Cable-type regulator:This type of window regulator is commonly installed in most modern vehicle models since they occupy minimal space, giving more room for safety beams and airbag. In addition, the cable regulator weighs lighter, thus contributing to the overall fuel economy. With its integrated assembly, the production expenses are also cut down even though it has more components than a scissor-type regulator. In a cable-type system, a power motor or manual crank moves the cables to a window tray. Since these cables suspend the complete load of your vehicle window, if they break, the window glass will directly fall into the door panel.

Choose between manual and power regulator

Generally, scissor-type and cable-type window regulators can be engineered for manual setup with a lever positioned in the door panel to move the glass window up and down. In manual operation, you will physically operate the window crank through the lever. On the other hand, a power-operated regulator has the electric motor to move the window glass. Because a power regulator assembly is made to fit snugly with tight clearances, windows that are not regularly cleaned will have a distinct drag, making them hard to slide up and down.

Other things to consider

It is always recommended to get a Nissan window regulator from a reliable and established supplier. With a large variety of brands offered, it is better to first check the product reviews for the performance, quality, and cost through trusted sites and forums. It is also advisable to buy a window regulator that is complete with instructions in case you opt to do the replacement yourself, which can save you money and earn you some auto repair experience.
