DIY Repairs You Can Do on Your Buick Verano

The Buick Verano is popular among car owners who like to have more modern features and fun style (read: the younger breed of car owners). Being a Buick Verano owner yourself, you'll understand why it is popular. Keeping your Verano in excellent condition need not be hard and expensive. In fact, if you have a little extra time in your hands, you can do repairs on your own. Just make sure you read up about your car, familiarize yourself with the parts, and make sure you have the right tools handy. Here are some repairs that you can do yourself:

  • You can replace a worn out or broken drive belt.

The drive belt is located at the front of the engine. Its function is to drive the engine accessories like the power steering, alternator, water pump, and so on. It is made of durable rubber, but it wears out over time. If you notice that your drive belt already has cracks, you need to replace it. But if you notice that it is just loose, all you need to do is to just re-tighten it.

  • You can replace the car battery.

The battery is the large black box that is located in front of the vehicle. Its function is to generate power supplied to the alternator. It needs to be charged at least once a year to maintain its excellent performance. You also need to keep its terminals clean because dirt and rust can form on it. After 5 years, you need to replace it with a new one because it might be dead by then.

  • You can replace the alternator.

The alternator is located at the front of the engine. It works hand in hand with the battery to create the required electric current to power up the electrical components in the car. Alternators are supposed to have an electrical output of 14 volts, and when you turn on the electrical components, it drops down to 12 volts. To check the voltage, use a voltmeter. If it drops lower than 12 volts, it might already be time to replace it.

  • You can replace the brake pads.

The brake pads are located beside the wheels. Their function is to apply the frictional force needed to stop your car. If the brake pads are already too thin, the built-in warning system connected to it creates a squealing sound when you are stepping on the brakes. The brake pads should always be thick enough for them to work properly. If they become an eighth of an inch thick, it is time to replace them.

  • You can replace the fuel filter.

The fuel filter prevents dirt, dust, fuel residues, and other particles from entering your engine. If the fuel filter gets clogged up, the flow of the fuel will be restricted. If there's little fuel that enters the engine, it will not be able to perform efficiently. The check engine light can also turn on when the fuel filter is too dirty.
