Nissan Maxima Catalytic Converter Customer Reviews

Shipping was quick, fit was good, but know that this cat does not come with the tacked on nuts to bolt your heat shields to. nor does it come with any heat shields. Also beware it only comes with the studs, 3 for cat to exhaust flange and 2 for cat to exhaust manifold. Does not come with the 4 replacement bolts needed for cat to exhaust manifold. You’ll need to buy them separate.

This is the first time I ordered a part online. After reading reviews I took my chances and ordered some parts for my truck. I must say, this was the easiest and best purchase I've done online. I received my parts quickly and everything was brand new as I expected. I will definitely use this site for all of my future orders. Great prices too..I must add that.

A Few Tips to Extend The Service Lifespan of Your Nissan Maxima Catalytic Converter

Did you know that your vehicle releases harmful chemicals into the atmosphere as you drive? That is why catalytic converters exist—to turn these harmful fumes into a less toxic emission. Your cat con is built to resist toxic substances and other contaminants. However, it's still vulnerable to wear and tear after a couple of years. So if you wish to extend your catalytic converter's life, try these tips:

  • Use a cat con cleaning solution.

One of the easiest ways to clear out substances inside your cat con is to flush them out with a cleaner. Though it usually comes in 16-ounce cans, you can purchase a bigger size, depending on the amount of chemicals to be removed from the cat con. To clean this component, simply pour the contents of the cleaner into the fuel tank. Then, just go on with your daily driving until the gas runs out to make sure that all of the cleaning agent has been consumed.

  • Check the exhaust pipes connected to the catalytic converter.

Over time, the exhaust pipes of your vehicle can get damaged, and this will eventually reduce the effectiveness of your cat con. Keeping an eye out for exhaust leaks and checking the EGR valve can help prolong the lifespan of your catalytic converter. If you discover that there are exhaust leaks, fix them as soon as possible to prevent the cat con from getting burned to a crisp due to extremely high temperatures inside it.

  • Have the cat con inspected by an expert mechanic.

Set a periodic visit to your nearby auto repair shop to have a cat con checkup. This prevents possible expensive damage that can ruin this conponent and also allows the mechanic to see if there are other components that need to be diagnosed. Remember that the cat con filters the harmful chemicals coming from your vehicle. Without it, your car will be contributing to the pollution in the atmosphere. If you notice that your ride has become rough, or the tailpipe emits dark smoke, then you might need to have your catalytic converter replaced. Don't just ignore a faulty cat con as this can lead to bigger problems and affect other related parts.

Helpful Tips When Installing a Nissan Maxima Catalytic Converter

A busted catalytic converter can get you frustrated since this component is responsible for sifting the harmful chemicals emitted by your vehicle. With a faulty cat con, you can even get arrested in some states due to the dark smoke coming from your car. When this component becomes spent, you need to replace it immediately to prevent the damage from becoming worse. For a quick Nissan Maxima catalytic converter installation, here are some tips you can follow:

Tip #1: Don't start until the exhaust has cooled down.

Your vehicle's cat con can become very hot while driving, making it hazardous to touch even after you've come to a halt. So when doing anything underneath your ride, you need to wait for the exhaust and other component to cool down first. Once you have parked your car, turn the engine off and wait for a a couple of minutes before starting with the installation. This gives the exhaust system enough time to cool down.

Tip #2: Apply some lube to unfasten the cat con's connections.

Before working on the cat con, make sure that you support your vehicle with heavy-duty jacks and jack stands. Don't rely solely on jacks, as these can suddenly fail and trap you underneath. While the car is raised, you have more space to navigate through the exhaust system. Identify the catty's location and spray some lube on the bolts to remove them easily. Let the lubricant cover the entire bolts, then use a wrench to loosen each one of them. With the lube settled on the loose connecting bolts, you will notice that it's now easier to uninstall the cat con. Be cautious when removing it so you don't damage the other components in the vicinity.

Tip #3: When it's too difficult to remove the cat con, just break it off.

If you realize that it's hardly possible to remove the cat con, then you might as well just break it. Fetch your hammer and break it off, while exercising caution to prevent damaging the other parts of the exhaust system. Apply just enough pressure as you hammer the cat con. Based on how strong the attachment is, some cat cons can be detached with just one jolt, while some may require a few strikes. When you have finally removed the cat con, inspect the other connecting parts of the exhaust system to see if no other components have been damaged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Among the three Nissan Maxima Catalytic Converters in the car, what can be done to determine which one should be replaced?

One of the three converters is usually found in the y-pipe and this rarely fails. In fact, this converter wouldn't even cost a Nissan Maxima an emission test if removed. The other two behind the engine compartment (pre-cats) are prone to failure. An error code after scanning verifies a pre-cat failure. Though the problem may not be obvious from the scan, the other cats have most probably decayed in one way or another. If budget isn't an issue, don't hesitate to change all three cats at once.

Can the Service Engine Soon (SES) warning light point to a Nissan Maxima catalytic converter failure?

The catalytic converter is closely related to the engine system, so the warning light should turn on if the device has failed. To be more certain that the converter has a problem, try to look for a sulfuric or rotten egg smell from the exhausts. Notice if the power of the Maxima's engine feels weaker and seems to struggle. If any of these problems are seen, with the SES light on, have the car's engine scanned at once to verify the issue and get the right steps done for proper service and replacement.

What do codes P0420 and P0430 in a Nissan Maxima engine scan test mean?

Both codes mean "Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold" failure. P0420 is for bank 1, while the P0430 code is for bank 2. For problematic Nissan Maxima catalytic converter issues, this is covered under the emissions warranty that's good for up to 80,000 miles. Immediately stop using the car until new parts necessary to for repair and replacement are bought. If the Nissan Maxima runs carelessly with bad converters, the honeycomb material of the device will be sucked into the engine and damage it as well.
