Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of switching to an aluminum or stainless steel grille assembly?
Aftermarket Ford Explorer grille assemblies made of aluminum and stainless steel are far more expensive than OEM Ford Explorer grilles made of ABS plastic, but they do have significant advantages over plastic grilles. Aluminum grille assemblies, which are usually made from 5xxx or 6xxx grade aluminum alloys, are more durable and more resistant to corrosion than plastic. Stainless steel grille assemblies, on the other hand, are not as common as aluminum grilles but are far stronger and more resistant to rust.
What is the difference between bolt-over and replacement-type grilles?
OEM replacement and custom grille assemblies are generally sold either in bolt-over or replacement-type configurations. Bolt-over grille assemblies are the easiest and quickest to install, as they mount right on top of the existing grille. Bolt-over grilles do not require drilling or cutting of the Explorer's front end and use only a set of hidden bolts, brackets, and clamps to secure the assembly onto the vehicle. Replacement-type grille assemblies, on the other hand, replace the entire stock grille assembly of the Ford Explorer. Because they are a complete transplant, replacement-type grille assemblies take more time and effort to install, but since the old grille is removed, they have a cleaner, seamless look compared to bolt-over grille assemblies.
How much do replacement Ford Explorer grille assemblies cost?
OEM grille assemblies for the Ford Explorer without the headlight holes cost between $40 and $120, while OEM assemblies with headlight holes cost $77 to $150. Aftermarket grilles such as aluminum billet grilles and mesh grilles cost much higher, with prices ranging from $200 to $1,000.
What is the proper way to clean a grille assembly?
It depends on the type of grille assembly on the Ford Explorer. For plastic grille assemblies, car wash detergent is good enough, but for aluminum grilles, it is recommended to use grille cleaners. Stainless steel grilles, on the other hand, require a special stainless steel cleaner in order to maintain its sheen.
